Kangaroo Island Council
The Kangaroo Island Council covers an area of approximately 4,400 square kilometres and is home to a resident population of approximately 4,364. The Council was formed in 1996 after the amalgamation of the District Council of Dudley and the District Council of Kingscote. The Island has a number of settlements including Kingscote, Penneshaw, Parndana, American River, Baudin Beach, Vivonne Bay, Stokes Bay, Island Beach and Emu Bay.

Kangaroo Island Parks and Wildlife
The island features 27 protected areas covering over 116,000ha (or 25%) and managed by Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH). Important protected areas include Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, Kelly Hill Conservation Park, Cape Gantheaume Wilderness Protection Area and Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area.

Kingscote Public Library is located in the main street of Kingscote, between the Town Hall and the Post Office. The Kingscote Public Library is part of the South Australian public library network and is jointly funded by state and local government. The library serves a population of approximately 4,384 and the library stock exceeds 21,000 items.
