On 28 & 29 November a two day workshop run by John Edwards, Bill Martin and Kate Perkins was held on Kangaroo Island with staff and community. A shared vision for the Health Service was created.

Shared Vision for Kangaroo Island Health Service

The Kangaroo Island Health Service is a place where people are encouraged to achieve their own best health.

We focus on the issues our community identifies. Community input is critical to our success and collaboration describes our approach. We listen to everyone, giving each individual the opportunity to voice their opinions. To find the best solutions, we openly embrace criticism.

Our community is one of individuals taking responsibility for their own health care, people being their own health managers. We realise that this may be different for different people and generations and we endeavour to find a respectful balance and assist people to do this. Our service is non-discriminating. Everyone gets equal access to quality service. No community member is disadvantaged by access issues or inability to pay. Transportation within, off and returning to the Island is guaranteed.

We focus on the issues that most affect our own community, and we are proactive in making the necessary improvements. We find out what people’s current and future needs are, in order to effectively respond to trends. Real and living data is used from a preventative perspective in order to effectively target heath interventions. Episode of care statistics inform our practice. Constant monitoring of our data ensures we stay in touch.

Integrated services – health, education, safety, transport, local government and social – actively collaborate to provide state-of-the-art health preventative initiatives for every community member. People know about our services, and our innovative service delivery system supports easy provision. We work together with government to ensure appropriate funding and equity for our residents. We have regular meetings between agencies, and explore active amalgamation of local services.

We have a highly skilled, confident, well-supported and sustainable workforce. Their workloads fit with their balanced lives, which flow from matching staffing to work requirements. Our environment is supportive of training and development both on- and off-Island. This training is easily accessible, flexible, and well supported by effective processes, protocols and information technology systems. We recognise, praise and encourage good work. Paid and volunteer staff feel appreciated and valued.

Open, respectful and frequent communication between all members of our community defines our Service. We use simple jargon-free language wherever possible. Confidentiality and respect are the cornerstones of our communication systems. At Kangaroo Island Health Service, all people are valued and are recognised for their contributions.

At KIHS we live our mission – “Healthy People, Healthy Community!”
